Westland Jewelry is committed to sustainability, which means using a system of production that can be supported indefinitely. This includes socially responsible local manufacturing and use of materials that do not destroy or displace natural environments or exploit its inhabitants. Westland does not use fair-trade metal or stones, as they are mined from the earth. All gold and silver is reclaimed and all stones are either vintage or lab-grown.
Lab-grown gems are not fake; they are identical to the natural stone in every way and cannot be told apart. The lab uses the same compounds that make up natural gemstones and grows them under controlled conditions to mimic the earth. Lab-grown stones are not to be confused with synthetic stones, which are glass or glass-mix copies made to look like the original. The use of lab-grown stones allows the line to reduce its carbon footprint without sacrificing the look or feel of the jewelry.
